Product Testing & Laboratory Control
Physical, colour and seam performance testing plus laboratory governance — from test-plan selection to method validation, calibration and result release.
By Sanjeewa Dehiwalage · Reviewed
Scope
- Fabric physical: mass per unit area, dimensional stability, pilling, bursting/tensile.
- Colour: shade evaluation, colourfastness to washing, rubbing, light and perspiration.
- Garment: seam strength, seam slippage, snap/button pull-off, care-label verification.
- Laboratory: method selection, equipment calibration, technician competence, result records.
Cost & implementation difficulty

Steps
- Build a test plan per fabric construction and end use; document with method, condition and pass criteria.
- Condition samples per ISO 139 (standard atmosphere 20 °C / 65 % RH) before testing.
- Use accredited or method-controlled labs; check method issue-year matches the buyer's spec.
- Verify equipment calibration status and control-sample results before releasing each shift's data.
- Record raw data, calculated results and disposition against the test plan.
- Escalate borderline results with re-test rules defined up-front; never re-test to pass.
Risks
- Testing off-standard atmosphere or with expired calibration.
- Using an obsolete method revision — pass/fail criteria may have changed.
- Averaging repeats to hide a single failing specimen.
- Releasing on a verbal 'ok' without a signed test report on file.
Evidence & records
- Approved test plan per style and material.
- Signed lab test reports with method, condition, equipment ID and technician ID.
- Calibration certificates and daily control-sample records.
- Non-conforming test log with disposition and corrective action linkage.
