RFID Tracking Implementation

Roll out item-level RFID for apparel inventory accuracy and omnichannel visibility.

By Sanjeewa Dehiwalage · Reviewed

Target outcome

Item-level RFID coverage from finished goods through DC and store, with inventory accuracy tracked as a KPI.

Steps

  1. 1.Scope and success criteria

Define categories, sites, KPI targets (inventory accuracy, read rate) and integration boundaries with ERP and WMS.

  2. 2.Tag and reader selection

Select GS1-compliant tags and reader hardware suited to product form factor and read environment.

  3. 3.Encoding at source

Encode SGTINs at manufacturer or DC and validate against master data.

  4. 4.Pilot site rollout

Deploy readers, train staff, and measure baseline vs post-RFID inventory accuracy.

  5. 5.Scale and govern

Extend to remaining sites; own data quality, tag suppression at end of life, and lifecycle governance.

Risks to watch

  • Tag placement causing read failures
  • Poor master-data quality undermining accuracy gains
  • Underestimated change-management effort in stores

Decision guidance

Treat the steps above as a sequenced checklist, not a simultaneous programme. Each step should have a named owner, an evidence artefact and an explicit gate before the next step begins. Re-baseline the target outcome if scope or regulatory requirements change mid-programme.
