Problem and CTQ

Marker efficiency = pattern area / marker area × 100%. Efficiency below target or unstable across ratios usually signals CAD settings, pattern versions or unmanaged constraints, not operator effort.

• Validate CAD settings and pattern versions.
• Stratify by style, width, ratio, nap/direction, checks/stripes, shrinkage and marker maker.
• Compare like-for-like markers only; never rank across unlike constraints.

Garment-factory example

A 5-pocket denim programme sits at 82.4% average efficiency across four widths. A width-band split and a locked nesting standard raise the like-for-like average to 85.1% with zero grain or matching exceptions in the following four weeks.

Method

1. Always report efficiency per width band, not a single pooled number.
2. Pilot parameter changes on one style/ratio before rolling them across the CAD library.
3. Keep the approved-marker library under version control.

Common mistakes

• Chasing efficiency by silently violating grain, nap or matching.
• Benchmarking a stripe-match marker against a plain fabric marker.
