What Lean Six Sigma solves in garment manufacturing

Two disciplines, one goal
Lean focuses on flow, speed, waste removal and workplace learning. Six Sigma focuses on variation, defect prevention, evidence and capable processes. Used together they cover quality, cost, delivery, safety, morale and sustainability.
Reading a garment problem
- Missed hourly targets and long waiting times point to a Lean flow issue.
- Uneven measurements or intermittent defects point to a Six Sigma variation issue.
- Most real problems have both — treat each with its own tool set.
Garment-factory example
A sewing line misses hourly targets and produces uneven sleeve measurements. Lean exposes bottlenecks and excess WIP; Six Sigma verifies which machine, method, material or measurement factors drive the sleeve variation.
Method
- Define the customer problem in the customer's language.
- Separate flow loss from variation on the same problem.
- Quantify the baseline and choose DMAIC, Kaizen or a combined approach.
- Confirm the gain after implementation.
Common mistakes
- Treating Lean Six Sigma as only a statistics programme.
- Selecting a project without customer or financial value.
