First-Time-Right: The Quality Metric That Pays for Itself

Every factory floor I have led has eventually arrived at the same realisation: inspection is not quality. Inspection is the price you pay for an upstream system that is not yet good enough.

First-Time-Right (FTR) shifts the conversation from catching defects to designing them out — at pattern, at sample, at pilot run. When FTR rises by even 5 points, rework rooms quiet down, on-time shipment improves, and operator morale follows.

The discipline is simple: every defect class is owned by the function closest to its root cause, and every pilot run is reviewed against a structured Challenge-Action-Result log before bulk is released.
