Line Efficiency

Earned vs available minutes on a sewing line.

Interactive calculator

Line Efficiency

Compare earned minutes to available minutes on a sewing line.

Formula: Line efficiency (%) = earned minutes ÷ available minutes × 100.

Planning aid only. Values are not stored or transmitted. Verify against your own IE and finance standards before using operationally.

This calculator is a shared implementation from the Garment Knowledge Calculators Centre. Values never leave your browser. The “Copy shareable link” button below the inputs captures the current values in the URL so a colleague can reopen the same result.

Worked example

40 operators × 480 available minutes = 19,200 available minutes; 800 good garments × 18 SMV = 14,400 earned minutes.

14,400 ÷ 19,200 × 100

75% line efficiency.

Limitations

  • Use validated garment SMV and good output; rejected or reworked pieces must not inflate earned minutes.
  • Separate planned breaks, approved downtime, absenteeism and learning-curve effects according to the factory's agreed IE policy.
  • Compare like-for-like shifts and styles; a single shift is not a stable benchmark.
