Module 5 · Lesson 4 of 17

Benchmarking responsibly

← Back to moduleBack to academy

Learning objectives

  • Explain the purpose of benchmarking responsibly in a garment-factory improvement project.
  • Apply the described method to a representative shop-floor situation.
  • Recognize the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Concept

Benchmarking learns from comparable processes without copying a practice whose context, risk, or economics differ.

Valid comparators require normalization for mix, volume, automation, skill, compliance, and denominator.

Enabling conditions (culture, maintenance, layout) often matter more than the visible tool.

Garment-factory example

Comparing changeover methods across knit and denim lines is only fair after adjusting for style complexity, lot size, and machine base.

Method

  1. Define the question and metric.
  2. Obtain data ethically.
  3. Normalize denominators and period.
  4. Observe the enabling process, not only the tool.
  5. Pilot an adapted practice, not a copy.

Common mistakes

  • Copying a tool without its management system.
  • Treating promotional claims as verified evidence.

Knowledge check

Pick one answer per question. Explanations appear after you submit.

  1. 1. A benchmark gap should be treated as what?

  2. 2. Which step protects against unfair comparisons?
