Module 5 · Lesson 2 of 17

Creative solution generation

← Back to moduleBack to academy

Learning objectives

  • Explain the purpose of creative solution generation in a garment-factory improvement project.
  • Apply the described method to a representative shop-floor situation.
  • Recognize the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Concept

Generate many distinct ways to control verified vital Xs before selecting a preferred solution.

Frame 'How might we?' questions around confirmed causes rather than open complaints.

Explore eliminate, simplify, substitute, combine, automate, standardize, signal, constrain, and redesign options to broaden the candidate pool.

Garment-factory example

For needle damage, teams generate material-handling, needle-selection, replacement-trigger, machine-setting, sensor, training, and product-design options separately, then combine.

Method

  1. Restate cause and CTQ.
  2. Set constraints (safety, compliance, cost ceiling).
  3. Ideate silently, then as a group.
  4. Combine and dedupe; retain a wide list for later scoring.

Common mistakes

  • Selecting the first familiar idea before divergence is complete.
  • Brainstorming symptoms instead of vital Xs.

Knowledge check

Pick one answer per question. Explanations appear after you submit.

  1. 1. Why keep ideation and scoring separate?

  2. 2. Every generated idea must trace to what?
